Class Descriptions

EMT-Basic
Class covers 42 sessions of both evening and some Saturday full days. Lectures and lab sessions are explained in the course syllabus. These classes break down to 24 lectures and 18 lab sessions. At the completion of this course the students that meet the state minimal requirements will be allowed to take the Rhode Island State and National Licensure test to become certified NREMT-Basics. Students will learn Skills in Basic Life Support, Respiratory Emergencies, Trauma Emergencies, vehicle extrication, and a new section on Terrorism awareness as it pertains to EMS. There will also be sections on medication administration, use of Automated External Defibrillators, and ambulance operations. Students will also be required to document 8 hours of observation time in a hospital Emergency Room. Students are responsible for all transportation to and from all classes. Students must obtain a minimum 70% grade point average on all quizzes, the mid-term exam, and final exam to be able to attend the state licensure exam. Lab sessions will have the students involved with hands on practice of learned skills with experienced EMS Instructors and their fellow students. Students shall be responsible to bring with them a working wristwatch, as this piece of equipment is an essential piece of your work uniform once you pass your licensure exam and begin working as a Rhode Island EMT. There will be a 10-student minimum to run the EMT – B program. If there are not more than 10 students, those that have given tuition will have the option of a reimbursement or to be added to the next EMT – B Session.

 

EMT-Cardiac
Requirements: Successful completion of  EMT-B and current CPR. Program presented in 40 classes, 20 lecture and 20 lab sessions.  Lectures and lab sessions are explained in the course syllabus. Our instructors are able to concentrate on smaller groups and deliver more intently on skills necessary in the practice of EMT Cardiac. At the completion of the program, those students that have successfully completed the minimal state requirements will be allowed to then take the Rhode Island state licensure exam to become a certified Rhode Island Emergency Medical Technician – Cardiac. Unlike others, we provided ACLS training as part of the curriculum.

 

EMT-Paramedic
Requirements: Successful completion of EMT-B and current CPR. Program requires a huge commitment and consists of over 400 hours of classroom lecture/didactic and over 500 hours of clinical setting training and demonstration of skill. In addition a significant time is spent riding on an approved 911 rescue. Because of the intensity of this course, a preliminary interview will need to take place with the owner and/or staff of American Safety Programs.

 

EMT Basic, Cardiac & Paramedic Refreshers
Course is held in 15 session's total, 11 for Basics, 15 for Cardiacs and 20 for Paramedics. This allows us to follows the state required standards for recertification at a student's licensure level. Those students meeting the required minimum state standards students will receive certifications of completion. All Rhode Island EMT's are required to attend a refresher course for recertification of licensure. There will be a 10-student minimum to run the EMT- R Class. If there are not 10 or more students registered for the class, the students that have provided tuition will have the option of reimbursement or to be added to the next EMT - R program.

 

EOA/MAST Updates
This 1 four (4) hour course is held to allow the student whom is wishing to challenge the Rhode Island licensure exam through reciprocity from another state. The course covers the use of the Esophageal Obturator Airway, and the use of Military Anti -Shock Trousers.

At successful completion of the course the student will receive a certificate to forward to the state verifying the course completion.

There will be a 4-student minimum to run the EOA – Mast Update Class. If there are not 4 or more students registered for the class, the students that have provided tuition will have the option of reimbursement or to be added to the next EOA-Mast program.

 

12 Lead ECG Interpretation
This program is a combination class. It can be a four (4) hour awareness and operations class, or it may be a complete eight (8) hour day class.

As the use in the field of the 12 Lead ECG Monitors become more prevalent and the importance of using these devices becomes more obvious, the EMT becomes a great tool in reducing the pre-hospital mortality of CAD. Students are taught how to obtain and interpret 12 lead ECG's. And in the eight (8) hour course students are taught further skills in recognizing specific distracters of the ECG.

There will be a 4-student minimum to run the 12 – Lead ECG Class. If there are not 4 or more students registered for the class, the students that have provided tuition will have the option of reimbursement or to be added to the next 12 – lead ECG Class.

 

Endo Tracheal Intubation
This four (4)-session program deals with the advanced invasive airway skill of Endo Tracheal Tube placement in both medical and trauma patients. This program will be both informative and challenging to the student. The ETT has become a prehospital skill that is available to the EMT-Basic as an added skill after licensure.

 

ACLS Full Certification
This is a 16-hour course designed to the student the necessary skills to manage the first 10 minutes of the ten core cases as outlined by the American Heart Association standards.  This course can be delivered in four 4-hour classes, or in two 8-hour classes. 

 

ACLS Re-certification
This 8 hour class is designed to refresh the student’s knowledge and skills in the 10 core cases as outlined in the American Heart Associating standards.  This course can be delivered in two 4-hour sessions or as a single 8-hour class.

 

PALS Full Certification
This is a 16-hour course designed to provide you with the necessary skills to manage pediatric emergencies. As outlined by the American Heart Association standards.

 

PALS Recertification
This 12 hour class is designed to refresh the student’s knowledge and skills in the 10 core cases as outlined in the American Heart Associating standards.
